Laka invites designers from around the world to submit their ideas of “architecture that reacts”. The main focus of the competition is on the solutions that develop through a process of changes and adjustments.
Laka Competition is an international annual competition that seeks innovative ideas in architecture, design and technology that are capable of reacting and dynamically adjusting to the conditions of the environment (either natural, social, or built).
Three main prizes and approximately ten honorable mentions will be selected for 2018.
The subject of the competition is architectural, design, or technological solutions that are capable of dynamic interaction with their surroundings.
Participants are strongly encouraged to look for the solutions not only in the definition of the “building” itself, but foremost to present the interdisciplinary approach which takes benefits from disciplines such as robotics, mechanics, digital fabrication, biodesign and biofabrication, computational design, materials science, bioarchitecture, social sciences, industrial design, mobility.
Project’s location, scale, size, and program are left to participant’s choice.
Awards for 2018
Laureates of the main prizes will be
- Awarded $1.000 (USD) per team and
- invited to join the ‘Laka Perspectives’ book vol. 2.
- Laureates of the main prizes and honorable mentions will be
- provided with feedback on their designs by selected experts from the Laka Accelerator,
- presented on Laka’s websites and promoted among Laka’s network of partners, and
- included in future Laka publications related to the competition.
Laureates of the main prizes will be invited to join the ‘Laka Perspectives’ book vol. 2 among such leaders as Toyo Ito (Laureate of the Pritzker Prize 2013 and UIA Gold Medal in 2017, Founder of Toyo Ito & Associates), Carlo Ratti (Director of the Senseable City Lab at MIT, Founder of Carlo Ratti Associati), Peter Kuczia (Founder of Kuczia Architects), Elizabeth Monoian and Robert Ferry (Founding Partners of Land Art Generator Initiative), and Kamil Łabanowicz (Team Leader at AUDI AG).

Q1: Is it okay to submit the same project that has been previously submitted to other competitions?
A: The participants can submit their projects that have been previously submitted to other competitions.
Q2: Is there a specific approach or place for the proposal?
A: The participants are free to decide the project’s location, scale, size, and program. Listed below are some highlighted issues that the jury will pay attention to: ● a properly indicated architectural, social, or environmental issue to solve ● an accurate analysis of the selected issue ● a properly chosen solution that “reacts” to the indicated issue. Q3: Is there a specified site or area for the project? Is there a scale limit, size limit or particular program?
A: The participants are free to decide the project’s location, scale, size, and program.
Q4: I received the registration number. Is that the only thing I needed for registration, without knowing my team members’ names?
A: The project submission must contain the three following files:
1. One board 24” (h) X 48” (w):
● Named according to the registration number (e.g., “0227.jpg”).
● Saved as a JPG file in RGB mode, in horizontal format with 150 dpi.
● The size of the JPG file should be less than 10 MB.
● In the upper right corner, the registration number must be included.
● This is an anonymous competition.
● The registration number must be the only form of identification.
2. A DOC file with the project statement (up to 500 words):
● Named according to the registration number (e.g., “0227-statement.doc”).
3. A DOC file with the participants’ personal information:
● Named according to the registration number (e.g., “0227-team.doc”).
● It should include name, profession, address, and email.
● In the case of a team, a team representative must be indicated.

Q5: Is video format allowed in the submission?
A: Video formats will not be accepted. Please check the Competition Brief which contains a list of three required elements of submissions.
Q6: Reference to the captioned subject kindly clarify if the competition entries are limited to building design or if a wider range of entries is acceptable such as industrial design objects, mobility etc.

We strongly encourage the participants to look for the solutions not only in the definition of the “building” itself, but foremost to present the interdisciplinary approach which takes benefits from disciplines such as robotics, mechanics, digital fabrication, biodesign and biofabrication, computational design, materials science, bioarchitecture, social sciences, industrial design, mobility. We avoid applying too many design constraints on the participants. The participants are free to decide the project’s location, scale, size, and program.
Q7: After the submission of designs for the competition, what rights does the organizer have over it? Are the rights only limited to reproducing digital submission, or will the organizer hold the copyright for design/concept/idea enabling them to further put the design in production/commercial application?
A: An excerpt from the Rules & Regulations of the competition:
“10. Participants hereby declare that they grant the Organizer a free license to the Competition project (work) with no time or territorial restrictions, in the following fields of operation:
– making copies of the work in a specific technique, including printing, reprographic, magnetic recording, and digital techniques;
– marketing, lending or rental of the original work or copies;
– public display, presentation, reproduction and making the work available to the public in a method everyone can access it at a place and time of his or her choice;
– using the work and its fragments for the Organizer’s promotion and advertising needs and his publications, in the form of press, TV, cinema, external and the Internet advertising, on any websites and domains as well as mobile services, in promotional and advertising materials and items and other forms of promotion in the fields of operation indicated above;
– nominating the work to the Organizer’s programs, programs, and projects of the Organizers’ partners – exercising derivative copyright to the work (disposing of and using the work development), in the fields of operation indicated above.”
Referring to the 2nd part of your question:
“Granting a license to the Organizer will in no way deprive the Participants of their right to dispose of the work and its copyright to other persons.
11. All authors of the sent projects retain their full moral rights (projects used in post-competition publications will bear their authors’ names and surnames). Should a necessity of the sent projects modification in post-competition publications occur, the Organizer will apply for a modification consent to the project authors.”
As organizers, we are not allowed to make use of your design other than described in the license – we cannot use your design in production or commercial applications. Please note that as organizers we can publish (eg.) promotional books about the competition and include the submitted projects. We also can distribute the books with fees, since we are a non-profit organization – those fees will be only used for supporting the statutory activity of the Laka Foundation (https://lakareacts.com/about-laka-foundation/) and they cannot be used in any other way by us.
Participants are the only authors and owners of the copyrights of their works, as Laka – we use ‘a license’ described above for promotional purposes, and we always include information about the authors – either we publish the images via our network, or in promotional books etc. Also, what is important here to underline – if there is a necessity to add a modification to your project (eg. while working on promotional materials), we always ask for such permission. If we don’t receive a reply or confirmation in such a case – we simply don’t modify the project or don’t use it in the publication.
Q8: If the author does not have a legal copyright/patent for the design at the time of the competition but the work is legit, is it still eligible for the competition?
A: A n excerpt from the Rules & Regulations of the competition:
“12. Participation terms and conditions:
– acceptance of these Rules and Regulations,
– submitting a project is equivalent to declaring possession of copyright to the project, (…)”
If a participant submits a project, and is the author of proposed solutions/descriptions, and used graphics/sketches/photos etc. (individually or as a team), it means that he/she or the team – possess the full copyright for the project (in this case we interpret that a work is automatically protected by copyright when it is created).
As organizers, we are not able to check the correctness of the copyrights of submitted projects. This is a participant’s responsibility to make sure that he/she possesses full copyrights to the project.
