CONDITIONS OF ENTRY – LUIS VALTUEÑA INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION – CONDUCTED BY DOCTORS OF THE WORLD SPAIN (MÉDICOS DEL MUNDO ESPAÑA) This is the twenty second consecutive year in which Doctors of the World Spain (Médicos del Mundo España) has conducted the LUIS VALTUEÑA INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION. Conditions to apply are detailed below:
WHO CAN APPLY
The competition is open to adult amateur and professional photographers of any nationality.
The photographs must narrate or tell a story related to these topics: humanitarian action, international cooperation, social exclusion, human rights violations, armed conflicts, natural disasters, refugee and immigrant populations or socially excluded groups.
PHOTOGRAPHS AND FORMAT
Each participant will be allowed to submit a maximum of ten photographs, which can be different or part of a series. Only photos taken between January 1, 2017 and October 30, 2018, which have not been previously awarded, will be accepted. Photos must be submitted in digital format.
Photographs must be sent in *JPEG format with a minimum resolution of 300 ppi/ppp, all high quality (12) compressed images with an Adobe RGB or SRGB color profile. The images must have a minimum size of 40 cms on their smallest side. The digital image’s original structure can only be manipulated through darkroom techniques such as adjusting the brightness, contrast and color, underexposure and overexposure. No other change to the original digital image will be allowed. Only single frame photos will be accepted. Photomontages and multiple exposures will be excluded from the competition. In case of doubt about a possible digital alteration of the image, beyond what is allowed in the conditions of entry, the organization reserves the right to request from participants to supply the original unretouched photo file as recorded by the camera, or a scanned copy of any unaltered negative or slide.
HOW TO SUBMIT ENTRIES
Photographs must be sent in *JPEG format via WeTransfer.
The digital images must not bear any mark identifying the entrant. The images will be sent by E-mail to: email@example.com with the subject line: “XXII PREMIO LUIS VALTUEÑA + ENTRANT’S NAME AND SURNAME” Along with the photographs, entrants must ALWAYS submit a completed entry form downloadable from: http://www.medicosdelmundo.es/premioluisvaltuena/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Cuestionario-a-rellenar.doc. In compliance with Spanish Organic Law 15/1999 on the Protection of Personal Data and its complementary regulations, MdM-Spain advises that participants’ personal data sent with their application, including their email address, will be incorporated into a file for processing purposes, which remains the property of the association. The purpose of this data collection and processing is to facilitate the development of the competition and to enable us to contact you if you are one of the winners according to competition rules. If you wish, you can exercise your right to access, rectification, cancellation and opposition under the law by writing to: MdM-Spain, C/ Conde de Vilches nº 15, 28028 Madrid, Spain.
The deadline for admission of the works will be 00.00 Spanish continental time since the publication of the rules and will end at 24.00 Spanish continental time on November 9, 2018.
The following unique prize will be awarded:
The winner will receive a project grant of 6,000 euros (amount before tax, which depends on the winner’s nationality and situation) to develop a photography project composed of at least 50 photos and a 30 minute video shoot related to the work of MdM-Spain, whether in Spain or in other countries where the organization is undertaking humanitarian action or international cooperation programs. The winner together with MdM-Spain will define the objectives and the development of the project, taking into account common interests and the operative security conditions related to possible destinations. The amount of the grant should cover all expenses needed to develop the project. Once the project’s terms are settled, MdM-Spain will not demand an account of those expenses. The grant will be given in three parts: 50% after the judges’ decision, 25% when the project starts and the remaining 25% when the project concludes. The photo project will have to be finished before the December 15, 2019.
Along with the winning entries, MdM-Spain will select other photos from all those submitted to form part of a travelling exhibition. In their promotion, MdM-Spain will identify the photographers whose works have been chosen.
The judging panel, made up of leading photographers and MdM-Spain representatives, will meet 45 days after the submission deadline in order to select the winners. After meeting and coming to a decision, the panel will announce:
- the winner of the project grant
- at least three finalists, as previously mentioned.
The work of these successful entrants will feature in the travelling exhibition. The panel’s decision will be communicated by simple majority of its members with no right of appeal. The panel may choose not to award a given prize if there is a lack of qualified entries. The panel’s decision will be conveyed to the creator of the winning photo or photo series, along with the other finalists, by phone or email using the information supplied on the entry form. This will be done before December 15, 2018 of the relevant year.WITHDRAWAL OF ENTRIES SUBMITTED If a photographer wishes to remove his/her entry, they must lodge a request at least twenty (20) days before the closing date for submissions, that is, October 20,, 2018. This can be done via an email sent to: firstname.lastname@example.org MdM-Spain will then arrange for the entry to be returned. AWARDS CEREMONY The awards ceremony will be held at a public event during January or February 2019 on a date and at a time to be determined.GENERAL RULES By participating in the Luis Valtueña International Humanitarian Photography Competition, entrants expressly accept its conditions of entry. Entrants accept that MdM-Spain may postpone, shorten, extend, modify, cancel or suspend the competition if necessary. This absolves MdM-Spain of all responsibility, provided it has communicated any change in an appropriate way. The winner and other finalists, in agreeing to the conditions of entry, afford MdM-Spain and its international network, the worldwide, non-exclusive right to make use of the winning entries until they revert to the public domain. Specifically, they transfer the right to reproduce, distribute, transform and publicly communicate their work, according to the following terms: The right of reproduction – for the sole purpose of making billboards and press inserts following this competition – under the banner of MdM-Spain and its International Network in exhibitions, projects and campaigns; in the exhibition catalogue and pamphlets; as well as on the MdM-Spain website, the exhibition blog and social media (Flickr, Facebook and Twitter) and in organization campaigns and actions. The right of distribution, in order to circulate inserts in newspapers, magazines, catalogs, among the public and also to accompany any articles or reports in different media, always citing the author of the images. The right of public communication, in the form of public exhibitions and associated venues, so as to display the winning entries and their accompanying display posters and material as mentioned, along with the possibility of third parties accessing the webpages referred to above. The right to transformation, where an image can be adapted, digitally altered or reproduced in other media. In addition, the major prize winners and finalists relinquish their non-exclusive rights to exploit the derivative works based on the original ones for an equal period of time and in the same countries. The major prize winner and the finalists whose works are selected expressly authorize MdM-Spain and its International Network to sign these rights over to third parties, in order to comply with the association’s foundational goals and projects. The images used will always include the creator’s name on all the works’ specimens. In no case will the photographs submitted be returned to their authors. The participants are responsible for the enforcement of existing laws on intellectual property and the right to own their image. Participants declare responsibly that promotion or reproduction of the work in any media determined by MdM-Spain, for the promotion of the prize or MdM-Spain’s projects and campaigns, will not damage or harm any rights of participants in favor of third parties. To this end, creators agree to be responsible to MdM-Spain for any financial penalties that may be incurred by third parties if/when creators violate their rights by any action, claim or conflict. To ensure these conditions are complied with, the prize winner and finalists whose works are chosen undertake to sign whatever agreements are necessary to give effect to the agreed assignment. TAX IMPLICATIONS The winner will be liable for whatever taxes are incurred in his/her collection of the prize, without prejudice as stated earlier to the applicable withholding tax. In conformity to current Spanish law, the competition prize will, in principle, be subject to retention of IRPF (personal income tax) or IRNR (non-resident income tax). MdM-Spain will carry out the retention when necessary. All other tax implications involved in the awarding of the prize will be the winner’s responsibility, exempting MdM-Spain of any responsibility in the matter. EXCLUSION Employees of MdM-Spain and their first degree relatives cannot participate in this competition. Nor can members of the judging panel or the technical team directly involved with the prize, nor members of their first degree relatives.
